Associate News Director Patrick Donges was brought on as Assistant News Director at WAMC in 2011 after first serving as the station’s Berkshire Bureau Chief out of Pittsfield, MA. Prior to his time at WAMC he reported on the city of Saratoga Springs for The Saratogian newspaper and served as News Director of WCDB 90.9 FM Albany, the University at Albany’s student radio station.

Born and raised in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley, where he was an avid WAMC listener, Patrick first became acquainted with the WAMC News team in-person as a newsroom intern while completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in public affairs journalism and political science at the State University of New York at Albany.

Kate Hoit - My year as a soldier/reporter in Iraq and coming home to Albany

This past week marked the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq by U.S. led coalition forces, the beginning of a war that, to date, has cost the lives of over 4,400 U.S. men and women in uniform, and, by some estimates, over 130,000 Iraqi civilians.

The war wasn’t only a turning point for U.S. foreign policy and international relations with the Middle East. For many, it was also personal turning point, including Bethlehem, New York native Kate Hoit.

I met Kate as a student at the State University of New York at Albany, where we were both studying journalism.

North Country high school, university students advance to championship round of robotics competition

Team 4124 (above), one of the two FIRST Robotics teams sponsored by Clarkson University, was a regional winner at the BAE Systems/Granite State Regional in Manchester, N.H., on March 2 and will advance to the FRC Championship in St. Louis, Mo., in April.

Imagine this; two teams of three robots each are pitted against each other in an area to fling projectiles and climb to the top of a steel pyramid.

Vox Pop : Open Forum - Banning Sugary Beverages : 3/12/13

One day before a ban on certain sugary beverages in certain settings in New York City was set to take effect; a state judge ruled yesterday that the policy, championed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, should not be imposed.

In his ruling, Justice Milton A. Tingling Jr. called the rules, “arbitrary and capricious,” echoing consumer and beverage industry claims that the rules, which would include restricting the size of sugary drinks to 16 ounces or less at restaurants, street carts, and entertainment venues, are confusing and unenforceable.

New York State Assemblyman Phil Steck - Fracking, green jobs, and the budget

New York State Assemblyman Phil Steck

Last week the New York State Assembly voted to impose a statewide moratorium on the controversial natural gas extraction process known as hydrofracking, following reports that Governor Andrew Cuomo was considering lifting the current ban on the practice now in place.

WAMC’s Patrick Donges spoke recently with New York State Assemblyman Phil Steck, Democrat of the 110th district, which includes Colonie, Niskayuna and part of Schenectady. Steck voted for the fracking moratorium, despite his district not being targeted for natural gas development.
