Jailhouse Calls Say Vermont Man Wanted to Take Over Town

Jailhouse calls from a Vermont man charged with attempted murder suggest he was planning on "taking over" a town.

Terrick Craft is accused of firing shots at Nicholas Brown last summer in Springfield.

Brown was not hurt, but Craft was arrested. The recordings played in court suggest that he was threatening violence against anyone who stood in his way of taking over Springfield. They were played during a hearing this week in which Craft's attorney asked a judge to lower his bail and release him from prison.

Vermont Police Enhancing Seat Belt Enforcement

Vermont State Police will participate in the national Click It or Ticket Campaign during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Vermont’s seat belt usage is estimated to be just over 84-percent.  

There have been 70 traffic fatalities this year and state police say about 69-percent of those killed were not wearing a seat belt.

Police agencies across New England are participating in the Click It or Ticket program and Operation Care - Combined Accident Reduction Effort with patrols and checkpoints through the holiday weekend.

Northern NY City Deploys Hi Tech Tourism Technology

The city of Plattsburgh is deploying high technology information kiosks to enhance tourism opportunities in the city

City officials announced Wednesday that a network of walk-up touchscreen kiosks will be installed in the city.  

The PlattInfo screens will provide information in English and French on restaurants, shopping, venues, events and points of interest in the city.  

Mayor Don Kasprzak says Plattsburgh is one of the first cities to use such technology and it will be made available on the internet and mobile devices.

More Questions on Vermont State Hospital

It looks like the state of Vermont will not meet its goal of starting construction on a new psychiatric hospital in Berlin before the end of this month.

But acting Mental Health Commissioner Mary Moulton and local officials in Berlin say they think the project is still on track.

The town Development Review Board put off a decision on the project for at least two more weeks at a meeting Tuesday night.

U.S. Marshal, VT State and UVM Police Seek Fugitives

Vermont's law enforcement community has a new tool for seeking dangerous fugitives in the state.

Since Oct. 1, the Vermont Violent Offender Task Force has apprehended about 30 suspects for crimes as varied as a 2001 murder in Florida to a series of sex crimes in Maryland.

The task force is made up of about 10 deputy U.S. Marshals working out of Rutland and Burlington, a state trooper and when the University of Vermont is not in session, a UVM officer.

Public Service Board Concludes Vermont Yankee License Hearings

Southwestern Vermont Airport Facing Design Changes

The Vermont Transportation Agency is considering design changes at the airport that serves Bennington to help it meet federal requirements due to take effect in 2015.

State Aviation Administrator Guy Rouelle says the new regulations require "safety areas" at each end of the runways for planes that over- or under-shoot their landing approaches.

The west end of the runway at the William H. Morse state airport is considered deficient.

He says the state has contracted with a design engineer to develop several alternative solutions.

48-Million Dollar Contract Signed to Build Buses

Nova Bus has signed a multi-million dollar contract for new buses to be built at their manufacturing plant in Plattsburgh.

Nova Bus officials announced Tuesday that the company will build 70 articulated buses for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, which serves Houston Texas.  

The 48-million dollar contract for the company’s Artic Buses will be assembled at the Nova Bus facility in Plattsburgh over the next year.

GP Plant Donates 25-Thousand Dollars in Bath Tissue to Sandy Victims

The Georgia Pacific plant in Plattsburgh is  sending a truckload of bath tissue from its northern New York manufacturing plant to help victims of Hurricane Sandy,

The Georgia Pacific plant in Plattsburgh makes Quilted Northern bath tissue.  On Tuesday, workers at the plant loaded more than 11-hundred cases of the tissue onto a truck. Mill  Comptroller Erik Lanzer says the material will be delivered Hurricane Sandy victims that are most in need.

GP has so far donated 11 truckloads of various products for Sandy relief.

Vermont Governor Calls for Food Donations at Holiday

Governor Peter Shumlin is urging Vermonters to help the less fortunate by donating food, money and their volunteer time during the holiday season.

Shumlin made the comments Tuesday while he toured the Community Kitchen Academy job training program at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Burlington.

He says Thanksgiving is the time to raise awareness about Vermonters who are struggling to feed their families nutritious meals during this holiday season.
