Ammad Omar

Ammad Omar is an editor on NPR's Tell Me More with Michel Martin.

Omar appears weekly on the program to talk with host Michel Martin in the "BackTalk" segment, a portion of the show highlighting listener feedback and giving updates on stories. He works with the rest of the Tell Me More staff to come up with story and interview ideas, and write and edit scripts.

Prior to joining NPR in 2011, Omar worked at WBEZ - Chicago Public Radio for five years serving as a morning news producer, news desk editor managing a team of reporters and producers, and as a program host occasionally filling in as the local All Things Considered and Morning Edition host.

Omar got his start in journalism in 2002 when he anchored the news for a satellite television station, Indus Vision, in Pakistan, which broadcast to more than sixty countries worldwide.

His work at WBEZ contributed the 2009 Associated Press Most Outstanding News Operation in Chicago award. Additionally, Omar initiated coverage that won the 2009 Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) award for Best Breaking News Coverage nationwide for WBEZ's reporting of the FBI arrest of then-Governor Rod Blagojevich in Chicago.

Omar graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

It's that time of year — where hair dryers, treadmills and lush hotel rooms aren't reserved for us Homo sapiens, but for our canine best friends. The 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is off and running this week at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Organizers say it's one of the oldest sporting events in the country, second only to the Kentucky Derby.
