Work Readiness Credential Considered for NY Schools

Albany, NY – Several states, including New York, are developing a national "work readiness credential" to supplement existing high school diplomas. But some educators fear it could be a disincentive for students seeking a high school diploma.

Town Board Proposes Revised Water District

New Baltimore, NY – A water district proposal was up for a vote last night by the town board of New Baltimore, in Greene County. The town board has decided to go ahead with bringing in municipal water, but has proposed changes to that water's destination. The decision has raised eyebrows among supporters and opponents of the municipal water system. More from WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

Gonzales Appointment Will Affect Region

Northampton, MA – Since Congress passed the USA Patriot Act in 2001, four states and hundreds of cities around the country have formally opposed the Act. Much of the organizing for those resolutions was done by a small organization in Western Massachusetts called the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Now the group is fighting the nomination of Alberto Gonzales for attorney general. WAMC's Pioneer Valley bureau Chief Eesha Williams reports.

Albany, NY – SUNY Chancellor Robert King has asked for a six-month leave of absence to study at Harvard and pursue other projects. The request comes just days before the state budget is to be released, and during a time when the Chancellor has been pursuing tuition increases. WAMC's Capitol Correspondent Karen Dewitt reports.
