Reform on NY Legislature's Plate for New Session

Albany, NY – New York's legislative session gets under way this week, and reform groups have put Governor George Pataki and the legislature on notice. They say they'll be watching to make sure lawmakers follow through on
campaign promises to change their ways. WAMC's Capitol Correspondent Karen Dewitt has the story.

Debate over value of stalled Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership Act

Plattsburgh, NY – The Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership proposal failed to pass in this session of Congress. The legislation, sponsored by Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords, would help preserve the historic, cultural and recreational resources of the Champlain Valley region. But critics say the measure favors Vermont, and want to see changes in the proposal. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

Instant Run-off Voting to be an Issue in Upcoming Legislative Session

Montpelier, VT – Instant run-off voting will again be an issue in the upcoming legislative session in Vermont. Advocates plan to introduce at least two proposals and the Vermont Secretary of State says she will help supporters push for such a system. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

Newspaper May Sue to Get Copy of Threatening Letter

Barre, VT – The Times Argus newspaper in Montpelier, Vermont is considering legal action in order to learn the contents of a threatening letter it received Monday. But police say it's key evidence and will not allow its contents to be revealed. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

School To Feds: Back Off

Marlboro, VT – The Vermont Board of Education has unanimously passed a resolution expressing support for President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act. Recently the public school in Marlboro, Vermont refused to comply with the Act. WAMC's Eesha Williams reports.

NY Towns to Keep Funds from Traffic Fines

Albany, NY – New York Governor Pataki has signed legislation that allows local governments to keep their share of revenues from traffic fines. The legislation repeals a budget measure that would have sent nearly $23 million dollars in speeding ticket revenues to state coffers. More from WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

SLC Opponents Pen Letter to DOS

Hudson, NY – St. Lawrence Cement officials have submitted a new application to the New York Department of State regarding their proposed Greenport plant in Columbia County. The new submission is because of the company's plans to redesign the plant, plans that were announced in August. The DOS has posted a notice for public comment; and plant opponents have written to the head of the DOS with three requests. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne reports.

Mass. Governor Urged to Compensate Wrongfully Jailed

Northampton, MA – The Massachusetts legislature has passed a bill to compensate people who are found innocent after being kept in prison for more than a year. Governor Mitt Romney has not said if he will sign the bill by Tuesday's deadline. WAMC's Eesha Williams reports.
