Athens Dredging Project is Questioned

Athens, NY – The comment period has been extended until next month for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposal. The proposal is for deepening a navigational channel in the Hudson River, in Greene County. Some groups say the project is fraught with environmental and economic problems; and the head of one of these groups is calling on an area congressman to sink the project. In addition, the Army Corps says it's been put in an unusual position. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne has more.

Attica Settlement Reached 34 Years Later

Albany, NY – Thirty-four years after the bloodiest prison riot in American history, a financial settlement has been announced for the survivors, and for the families of the hostages who were killed at the Attica Prison in western New York. WAMC's Senior Correspondent Brian Shields reports.

Testimony Assesses Negatives of Re-importation

Montpelier, VT – A former Canadian legislator is urging the VT legislature to move slowly in its push to join with four other states that want to import drugs from Canada.
The VT legislature has been holding a week of hearings on drug re-importation, and the latest testimony included people speaking on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. Advocates of re-importation doubt that the cautionary tales from those against the idea will sway VT legislators away from a re-importation plan. Pat Bradley has more.

Environmental Group Claims Cell Company Concealed Data

Lake George, NY – Officials from The Adirondack Council say they have found evidence that the company trying to site a cell tower near Lake George has not disclosed info about an existing transmitter near the proposed Pilot Knob site. The AC believes the revelations will quash the company's efforts to build the cell tower. But NEXTEL reps say the enviro. group has misinterpreted the facts and are making misleading claims less than a week before a hearing to determine the fate of the tower. Pat Bradley reports.

Lawmaker Raises Concerns Over Proposed Resort

Kingston, NY – A Hudson Valley area assemblyman is calling on the head of New York's DEC to order hearings on various topics related to the proposed Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park. He says there are a number of issues lacking in detail in the developer's draft environmental impact statement. The developer's attorney refutes that notion, and says these issues have been detailed. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne has more.

NY Budget Adds Up for Environmentalists

Albany, NY – Environmentalists say they are somewhat pleasantly surprised by New York Governor George Pataki's budget proposal. They are still poring over the details, but agree that funding for the Environmental Protection Fund as well as for wetlands are standouts. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne has more.
