Report slams federal fuel policy, wants Vermont to take up the slack

Burlington, VT – The Vermont Public Interest Research Group - VPIRG - released a new report Tuesday that says Vermonters paid an extra $13 million at the pump in 2005 as a result of the Bush administration's energy policy. The group used the release of the report to initiate a state-level campaign to address fuel consumption and global warming.

Springfield's Top Cop Fights for Her Job

Springfield, MA –
In Springfield, Massachusetts the city council last night came to the defense of Paula Meara, the embattled police chief. A state-funded report recently called Meara's 500 employee department dysfunctional. Then a top city official called on her to resign. WAMC's Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Eesha Williams reports.

House Approves $10 Million For Housatonic Valley Heritage Area

Pittsfield, MA – The House of Representatives has approved a plan to allocate 10 million dollars over ten years for the preservation of historic sites along the Housatonic River in Berkshire County and Connecticut.

Court Says Okay to NY Wine Shipments

Millbrook, NY – Following Monday's U.S. Supreme Court decision that reverses a ban on shipping wine out of state, New York winemakers and agricultural industry representatives are cheering the news. They, along with some lawmakers, say the decision will help to boost the state's economy. Wholesalers say the ruling weakens alcohol laws. More from WAMC's Allison Dunne.

Working Families Party establishes new chapter

Plattsburgh, NY – New York's North Country is the latest region to establish a chapter of the Working Families Party. The political party, first formed in 1998, is trying to create chapters across New York State.

Burlington Bay Water Quality Report Issued

Burlington, VT – Last week, the University of Vermont's Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory released a report on the water quality of Burlington Bay. The report finds that while the bay's health is, in general resilient , stormwater run-off and phosphorous contamination remain problematic.
