Sanders Offers Amendment to Block Reading Investigations

Washington, DC – The House is scheduled to vote on an appropriations bill that includes a Freedom to Read Amendment offered by Vermont's Congressman. Bernie Sanders is attempting to block funding for the Justice Department that allows officials to investigate the materials people are buying at book stores and taking out of libraries. But it's an effort that was tried last year......and failed.

"Operation Safe Child" Launched In New York

Albany, NY – New York State Governor George Pataki and Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings joined forces yesterday to help launch a new initiative, dubbed "Operation Safe Child". The program is intended to raise awareness about child safety and to make the current Child ID system more readily available to parents throughout New York State. Poll Highlights the Hudson River

Beacon, NY – A poll is out on Hudson River environmental issues, and those leading the poll say the results show complacency and misperceptions among residents living in the seventeen counties along the river, from Essex County to Manhattan. It's the first Pace University survey on the topic. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne has more.

Defoliating caterpillar hurting sugar maples

Poultney, VT – The three-and-a-half inch long Forest Tent Caterpillar has been found in many parts of Vermont, and last year defoliated an estimated 90-thousand acres of forest. A favorite target of the caterpillar is the sugar maple, and worries are mounting about how much damage the caterpillar might do to Vermont's maple trees this year.

Feds to Assess ATV Safety Standards

Plattsburgh, NY – The Consumer Product Safety Commission's chair has called for a review of all
existing ATV safety standards. CPSC Chair Hal Stratton wants to know whether the current voluntary safety standards for ATV's are adequate or whether the standards should be made mandatory. ATV enthusiasts in our region say they don't mind the idea of a safety review. But they wonder how the feds can mandate what, all too often, comes down to common sense use of the vehicles.
