Race for Holyoke Mayor Heats Up

Holyoke, MA – A preliminary election in Holyoke, Massachusetts yesterday narrowed the city's choices for mayor to two. Incumbent Mayor Michael Sullivan will face current City Councilor Mark Lubold in the upcoming November eighth election. WAMC'S Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Jessica Bloustein talked to both candidates.

State of emergency?

Pittsfield, MA – Because of severe flooding over the weekend and more rain expected in the coming days, Pittsfield, Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency. And the members of the Berkshire Delegation are imploring Gov. Romney to take it upon himself to declare a state of emergency for several areas of Western Massachusetts.

Suburban Albany school district under fire

Colonie, NY – A suburban Albany school district is facing accusations of discrimination. Three teachers have filed claims with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the State Supreme Court in Albany County, arguing that their pregnancies cost them their jobs. Pittsfield, MA – The Berkshire Delegation is appealing to Gov. Mitt Romney for state funds to aid those effected by severe flooding in parts of the county over the weekend. Our Berkshire Bureau, Chief Carrie Saldo spoke to residents as they were cleaning up their homes Tuesday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Tammy Hits Northeast

Poughkeepsie, NY – Emergency response teams in the Hudson Valley are assessing the amount of damage caused by the rainstorm that hit the Northeast over the holiday weekend. In parts of Dutchess and Ulster Counties, the total amount of rainfall broke century-old records.

Warm Fall Means Greener Apples and Less Profits For Orchardists

Plattsburgh, NY – The unusually warm fall has slowed the ripening of some apple varieties, particularly the McIntosh, Vermont and northern New York's dominant apple variety. Making trim kids

Bennington, VT – A health organization which services patients in southern Vermont and New York state has found that 25 percent of area youth are either obese now or risk suffering major weight problems. And Southwestern Vermont Health Care has developed a program to help combat that problem.
