Mass. Awarded $44M in Film Tax Credits in 2011

BOSTON (AP) — Film companies have been awarded $44 million in Massachusetts tax credits for projects filmed in 2011, with nearly two-thirds of new spending generated by the productions going to individuals and businesses located out-of-state, including many individuals making more than $1 million.

That's a jump over the $18 million in credits in 2010.

The Department of Revenue report credited the increase on the return of multiple major feature films being made in Massachusetts.

Sanders bill would crack down on tax havens

MONTPELIER, VT. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is pushing legislation to stop corporations from sheltering income in the Cayman Islands and other tax havens. The legislation also would end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs and factories overseas.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is campaigning for a big tax hike. Patrick is making the case that more revenue is needed to pay for things people say they want and need.

Governor Deval Patrick, during a recent swing through western Massachusetts, pressed the case for raising taxes to invest in education and transportation infrastructure. Patrick met with students and faculty in a machinists training program at Springfield Technical Community College. The program prepares people to work in the precision manufacturing sector.

Tax Return Season Begins

The IRS has delayed the opening of the 2013 federal tax filing season until this Wednesday, January 30. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue is already accepting state returns. The D-O-R kicked off the tax return season with a new one stop web page. WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the Massachusetts Revenue Commissioner, Amy Pitter.

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts House Republicans are proposing new rules that would make it harder to pass tax hikes or dip into the state's rainy day fund.

As part of a package of rules changes, the GOP wants to require two-thirds votes for all tax increases or withdrawals from the stabilization fund.
