Thursday was the deadline for candidates to file their post-election campaign finance reports with the Vermont Secretary of State's office. They indicate that incumbents spent far less than challengers and that Political Action Committees were not very successful in getting their candidates elected in the state.

Vermont Governor Spends $320k to Win Re-election

New campaign finance reports show that Vermont Republican gubernatorial challenger Randy Brock spent more than $806,000 in his unsuccessful attempt to unseat Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin.

In campaign finance reports filed Thursday, Brock said he spent $806,647, which included a $300,000 loan he made to his campaign.

Shumlin's finance report says he spent $320,761 and he still has $932,975 on hand.

Thursday was a deadline for candidates to file their post-election campaign finance reports with the Secretary of State's office.

Voters Give Vermont's Liberty Union Party Major Status

Vermont's Liberty Union Party has again joined the ranks of the state's major political parties.

To be recognized as a major party in Vermont, a statewide political candidate must receive at least 5 percent of the votes in a statewide election.

On Tuesday, Liberty Union candidate Mary Alice Herbert won 13 percent in her race against Democratic Secretary of State Jim Condos. The party lost its major party status in 2008.

In 2014 Vermont will have four major parties: Democrat, Republican, Progressive and Liberty Union.

Sen-elect Warren Meets With Gov. Patrick

Massachusetts U.S. Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren met with Governor Deval Patrick Thursday as she prepares for her new job in Washington. WAMC’s Paul Tuthill report.

After a closed door meeting that lasted for nearly an hour, senator-elect Warren told reporters she was grateful for what she called the “ good counsel” of the governor.

In a race that could end up deciding which party controls the New York State Senate, the final vote count may not be in for two or more weeks.

The new 46^th senate district is nearly deadlocked with Republican Assemblyman George Amedore trailing Democratic School Board member Cecilia Tkaczyk by 139 votes with 7500 absentee and affidavit ballots due to be counted in the coming weeks.

Dutchess County Republican Chairman Michael McCormick says State Senator Stephen Saland isn’t out of the running just yet even though he lost on Election Day.

Democrat Terry Gipson was the top vote getter in a three way race, but McCormick said on Wednesday that Saland could still win when absentee ballots are counted.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is insisting he will serve out his current term and not leave to take a job in the Obama administration. WAMC”s Paul Tuthill reports

Governor Patrick, who served as a campaign surrogate for his friend the president, was asked Tuesday night what role he might play in the second Obama term.

Patrick said Massachusetts Senator John Kerry is a great senator and would make a terrific secretary of state. But Patrick said it is wild speculation that Obama will appoint Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton.

The outcome of Tuesday’s closely watched, highly competitive election for US Senate in Massachusetts was not surprising, but was none the less improbable. When the campaign began, Warren was a relatively obscure, first time candidate, according to Tim Vercellotti, the director of the Western New England University Polling Institute.
