Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over PCB Cleanup In Berkshires

Representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, General Electric, and the state governments of Connecticut and Massachusetts, recently met with stakeholders to provide updates on the cleanup plan for removing PCB’s from the Housatonic River and Silver Lake in Pittsfield.

At an EPA Housatonic River Citizens Coordinating Council meeting at the Lenox Library Wednesday evening, community stakeholders raised concerns over information presented on a status update of the cleanup project at Silver Lake in Pittsfield.

Company Offers Technology to Aid in Housatonic PCB Cleanup

In an event yesterday evening sponsored by local environmental groups and hosted by the Housatonic River Initiative, company BioTech Restorations presented new technologies they’ve been developing to remove harmful chemicals from contaminated soil.

Panel Focuses on How PCBs Affect Wildlife

Hosted by the Housatonic River Initiative, a non-profit dedicated towards clearing the Housatonic of PCB's for the past 20 years, panelists made the case for thorough cleanup along the rest of the river. General Electric and the EPA have already dredged the first two miles of the Housatonic from the GE site through Pittsfield. An EPA plan for the so-called "Rest of River," six miles of cleanup from Pittsfield to Woods Pond in Lenox, is still being developed.
