Thousands Still Without Power in Massachusetts After Storm

The snow and wind from the weekend’s winter storm knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of Bay State residents this weekend, but the while much of the state has had their electricity restored, residents in some areas are still waiting.

As of 10 am Monday morning, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported that 116,000 were still without power – including 93,000 NSTAR customers, and 23,000 served by National Grid.

Massive Winter Storm Slams Northeast

BOSTON (AP) — A massive storm packing hurricane-force winds and blizzard conditions is sweeping through the Northeast, dumping more than 2 feet of snow on New England and knocking out power to 650,000 customers.

More than 28 inches of snow had fallen in parts of central Connecticut by early Saturday, and areas of southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire notched 2 feet or more.

The National Weather Service says up to 3 feet is expected in Boston, threatening the city's 2003 record of 27.6 inches.

Winter Storm: Patrick Closes MA Roads

BOSTON (AP) — The governor of Massachusetts is banning all traffic from roads after 4 p.m. today, when the worst of a powerful snowstorm is expected to be bearing down on New England.

It's believed to be the first traffic ban in the state since the blizzard of 1978.

Boston could get as much as three feet of snow, which would break the city's snowfall record of 27.6 inches.

Cuomo: NY state plows, road crews ready for storm

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state has more than 1,500 snow plows, about 470,000 tons of road salt and hundreds of highway workers ready to tackle what's expected to be the worst storm so far in 2013.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging people to leave work a little early.

Bloomberg also said Friday that New York City hopes to have all streets plowed at least once by midmorning Saturday.

Some Connecticut stations already out of gas in storm rush

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Some Connecticut stations already have run out of gas during the rush to prepare for the approaching blizzard.

Motorists say stations in Torrington, West Hartford, Vernon, East Lyme and other towns ran out of fuel Thursday afternoon and evening as people filled their cars and trucks as well as containers for generators and snow blowers. Long lines were reported at many stations.

NY State Police: Stay off Hudson Valley highways

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York State Police troop that covers a four-county area east of the Hudson River is advising motorists to stay off local highways during the storm that's expected to drop up to 18 inches of snow in some areas along the Massachusetts and Connecticut borders.

Snow Sports Eager for Storm

A midwinter storm headed to the Northeast U.S. on Friday could drop more than a foot of snow, setting up a weekend of skiing, sledding and snowmobiling in places that have been stuck with bare ground for much of the season.

The storm comes just after the 35th anniversary of the historic blizzard of 1978, which paralyzed the region with more than 2 feet of snow and hurricane force winds. This week's storm isn't expected to come close to that, but outdoor enthusiasts who have been disappointed with the season so far say they'll take what they can get.
