Conn. lawmakers unveil bipartisan gun control plan

Connecticut lawmakers say they hope their announcement of proposals to curb gun violence sends a message to Congress and other state legislators that bipartisan agreement on gun control is possible.

Legislative leaders yesterday revealed proposals spurred by the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting following weeks of bipartisan, closed-door negotiations. A vote is expected Wednesday in the General Assembly, where passage is all but assured.

Newtown Sees Jump in Gun Permit Applications

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Applications for gun permits have jumped in Newtown, Conn., since a school massacre there revived the national debate on gun control and led to worries about new restrictions.

Newtown in recent years has issued about 130 gun permits annually. Police say the town received 79 permit applications in the three months since the Dec. 14 massacre, well over double the normal pace.

Robert Berkins, records manager for Newtown police, says many applicants are expressing concerns that their gun rights will be taken away.

The Sage Colleges to name center after Newtown principal

TROY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York Capital District college plans to establish a new education center in honor of Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Hochsprung, who was a doctoral candidate in the college's educational leadership program.

Hochsprung, five other educators and 20 children were killed in the Dec. 14 mass shooting at the school in Newtown, Conn.

Conn. legislative gun panel gets final briefing

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A legislative subcommittee reviewing Connecticut gun laws is receiving some final expert testimony before the lawmakers begin devising recommendations for possible changes to the laws in light of the Newtown school shooting.

The gun violence prevention subcommittee faces a Feb. 15 deadline to forward its ideas to legislative leaders, who hope the full General Assembly can vote on a package of reforms at month's end.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut lawmakers are reviewing mental health care following the Newtown school shooting, even though they and the public have little insight into what might have been ailing the 20-year-old gunman.

A prosecutor says he cannot release any information about Adam Lanza's mental health because of state conduct rules for attorneys.

His office is reviewing whether details of Lanza's mental state can be released to the public after the police report is completed, possibly in June.

Sheriff’s deputies are well-received as BOCES SROs

GOSHEN – Recently reintroduced sheriff’s deputies at the Orange-Ulster BOCES complex in Goshen have been well-received by students and staff, District Superintendent Terrence Olivo said Thursday.

The deputies were placed at the campus following the tragedy at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school.

Olivo said the deputies have raised the comfort level in the buildings.
