Officials Celebrate Launch of Massachusetts Broadband Network with Berkshire Students

In a crowded gymnasium at the Farmington River School in Otis, Massachusetts, a class of fifth graders seated in front of a large projection screen was able to video chat with students across the world at the Vive Digital broadband center in Bogota, Colombia…

Students also communicated with staff at NASA’s Godard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Fiber Optic High-Speed Internet Will Come to Western Mass. in March

A public economic development institute in Massachusetts has released a detailed map of when areas of Western Massachusetts will be connected with a federally funded high-speed internet fiber optic network. The first segments will be operational in the coming months.

At a community meeting in Great Barrington on Tuesday evening, Judy Dumont, and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative announced that the first segments of the fiber-optic MassBroadband 123 network will be lit up this March.

State of Vermont Moves Broadband Responsibility

The state of Vermont is dissolving the state office responsible for expanding broadband computer access in the state by moving those responsibilities into the Agency of Commerce and Community Affairs.

The role of the office called Connect Vermont had been to create and expand high-speed broadband access statewide by the end of this year.

Broadband Funding Available to Berkshire Businesses

Small businesses in the Berkshires are being encouraged to apply for a grant that would allow them to expand their use of technology and broadband internet. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports…

Between now and January 31^st, some small businesses in the Berkshires are eligible to apply for funding that would serve to expand their use of broadband technology. The initiative is managed by the Pittsfield Economic Revitalization Corporation, or PERC.
