Residents Rally Behind Kingston Mayor

In response to the recent controversy regarding Kingston Mayor Shayne Gallo’s firing of a city employee, several concerned residents came to City Hall Tuesday evening to speak to the city council about how the issue has been handled.

Residents who offered their opinions Tuesday night spoke in support of Gallo personally or as a leader and elected official.

City resident Jeanne Edwards said that the mayor has already apologized and it’s time to move on, telling the council she was embarrassed to see the city’s dirty laundry has being aired for all to see.

The Bardavon Launches Four Seasons of the Hudson Valley

There’s a new festival in New York. It’s called Four Seasons of the Hudson Valley, and the hope is to help revitalize two cities and their waterfronts through the arts. The Festival is a partnership between the The Bardavon 1869 Opera House and a host of Hudson Valley community organizations.

George Thorogood and The Destroyers at UPAC

Legendary blues rock guitarist George Thorogood and his Delaware Destroyers will rock the stage of UPAC next Tuesday, March 19th.

Thorogood is best-known for his songs “Bad to the Bone” and “I Drink Alone,” as well as his covers of blues standards such as Hank Williams’ “Move It on Over,” John Lee Hooker’s “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” and Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?”

Former Kingston Fire Chief is Charged After NYS Audit

A former fire chief in Ulster County's City of Kingston was charged following an audit by the New York State Comptroller. The audit alleges that the City of Kingston made $23,000 in improper payments to employees for unearned leave time.

Ten Hudson Valley Catholic Schools to Close

The New York Archdiocese will close 24 Roman Catholic schools in a cost-saving move. Ten of these schools are in the Hudson Valley, and school administrators say they are figuring out what to do.

The Archdiocese will close 22 elementary schools and two high schools by the end of the school year, with more than 4,000 students affected. Rosalie Fegan is the principal of St. Joseph School in Millbrook, in Dutchess County – one of the schools on the closing list.

Joseph Zwilling is a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York.

Two Separate Housing Initiatives are Unveiled

A town in New York’s Hudson Valley has a new affordable housing initiative, while officials across the river want more first-time homebuyers in their Hudson Valley city.

Officials from the Dutchess County Town of Rhinebeck and Hudson River Housing will provide details Tuesday on a new workforce housing initiative to sell affordable housing units at The Gardens at Rhinebeck.

Kingston receives national "Great Street" honor

Kingston Mayor Shayne Gallo accepted a plaque over the weekend from the American Planning Association, designating Uptown Wall Street as one of the nation's Ten Great Streets for 2012. New York City’s Fifth Avenue and Saratoga Springs’ Broadway also won the honor. Hudson Valley Correspondent Hank Gross reports.

“Kingston is steeped in history,” explained James Rousse, president of the APA's New York Metro Chapter. “Wall Street isn't just a nice place to be, it's America.”

Mayor Shayne Gallo was thrilled with the city’s designation.

Aging Infrastructure: Sinkholes

Officials in the city of Kingston say repair work is expected to begin today on an expanding sinkhole that opened along a busy street. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports…

The sinkhole, formed in April near a city intersection, is being blamed on a leaky tunnel 75 feet deep that was constructed by New York City about 100 years ago.
