An independent audit of the Vermont State Police payroll, requested after a trooper fraudulently claimed large amounts of overtime pay, has found that most employees were at a low risk of fraud.

The audit done by StoneTurn Group LLP shows that the process for approving, reporting and monitoring overtime is vulnerable to fraud, abuse and waste.

Killington, Vermont Moves to Create Police Department

The Vermont ski town of Killington is a step closer to creating its own police department.

Killington already has town constables, who are elected. The Rutland Herald reports the public will decide at Town Meeting in March whether to shift from that to an actual police department in which the officers are appointed.

Vermont State Trooper to Change Plea in Time-Sheet Case

A former Vermont State Police sergeant charged with padding his time sheets is expected to change his plea.

The Burlington Free Press reports that James Deeghan is scheduled to withdraw his not-guilty pleas on Monday.

Details of the potential plea agreement were not made public on Wednesday.

Vermont State Police Recover Items Stolen in VT and NH

Vermont State Police say a search of a stolen car being used by a fugitive helped recover items stolen in Vermont and New Hampshire in recent months.

Police say 28-year-old Michael Hoehl repainted a stolen car four or five times so police wouldn't recognize the vehicle, allegedly stolen from Rivendell High School in Orford, N.H., in October.

He was arrested Tuesday after police spotted the vehicle in Newbury. Troopers allegedly chased Hoehl into the woods and he displayed a handgun, but he was apprehended without injury.

Vermont House Member Killed in Crash

A Vermont House Representative was killed Friday morning after a car struck him on a snowy road.

Vermont State Police responded to an accident on US Route 7 Friday morning.

Republican State Representative Greg Clark of Vergennes had pulled onto the shoulder of the road and exited to clear his windshield.

He was then struck by another car. Emergency responders initiated CRP and transported Clark to Porter Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Vermont Cop Says Man in NM Prison Has Wild Story History

The Vermont State Police's top criminal investigator says the man in a New Mexico prison for killing a Vermont girl in 2000 has a history of making wild claims as part of a long-running goal of being incarcerated in the federal prison system.

Major Ed Ledo is the investigator who arrested Dana Martin in 2000 on charges Martin had killed a 15-year-old girl in Barre.

Ledo says he doesn't know what allegedly motivated Martin to send two New Mexico men to kill two Vermonters by strangling them with neck ties and then mutilating their bodies.

Vermont Cops Say Both NM Men in Murder-for-Hire Plot

Vermont State Police investigators say two New Mexico men traveled to Vermont as part of a conspiracy to murder two people in the state, but only one of those two has been charged as part of the conspiracy.

Twenty-three-year-old Tanner Ruane is being held in New York state on conspiracy to commit murder charges issued in New Mexico.

The second man, 41-year-old Mark Staake, is being held in Vermont as a fugitive from justice on a charge that he violated his probation in his home state.
