Hudson Valley horse owner puts spotlight on drugging

Susan Kayne, a Hudson Valley equestrian who created the TV series Unbridled andhosts Ireland Unbridled, was featured in a recent New York Times investigative report that uncovered rampant drugging in horse racing and the bureaucratic red tape that stands in the way of reform. The horse owner spoke with WAMC’s Alan Chartock about her case.

Derby and Preakness Winner Scratched from Belmont

I'll Have Another's bid for a Triple Crown ended with the shocking news that the colt is out of tomorrow’s Belmont Stakes due to a swollen left front tendon.

According to Dennis O'Neill, brother of trainer Doug O'Neill, the horse galloped Friday morning and after a veterinary scan, the tendon seemed "kind of tender."

O'Neill told The Associated Press that, "the horse is sound and happy, but it's not worth it."

'I'll Have Another' takes another jog around Belmont

Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another jogged around the 1½-mile Belmont Park oval for a second day in a row and is scheduled to resume galloping on today. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports…

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

The colt's assistant trainer Jack Sisterson said Thursday "he gets over the track fantastic, he looked super, his energy level is high and he's doing everything we want to see him doing."

The top two executives at the non-profit New York Racing Association, which operates New York’s three state-owned horse tracks, were fired last week amid allegations they knew the company was collecting more than the legal amount of so-called takeout on certain bets, costing winning bettors an estimated $8.5 million dollars.

The firings have called into question the idea of gambling and gaming in general, as Governor Andrew Cuomo calls for a constitutional amendment to allow Las Vegas style casinos in the state.
