The Dowmel Lecture Series
The J. Leo Dowd and Catherine Mellon Dowd Lecture Series is funded by The Dowmel Foundation. Five to eight lectures are offered each year between September and March at the Monument Mountain Regional High School Auditorium in Great Barrington, MA.

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, are given by well-known public figures who will highlight issues of current national and wqrld affairs in the fields of law, health, medicine, education, commerce, industry, labor, science and ecology.

J. Leo Down and Catherine MellonJ. Leo Dowd was born in Utica, New York in 1902. He was affiliated with the International Silver Company of Connecticut. Later, he became vice president of the Shenango China Corporation in Pennsylvania. In 1960 he became owner-manager of the radio station WSBS-AM in Great Barrington, retiring in 1973.

Catherine Mellon Dowd was born in Utica, New York in 1900. She graduated from Oneonta Normal School, now SUNY-Oneonta, where she earned her teaching credentials. She taught elementary school in the Utica school system.

The Dowds were married in 1929, and in 1962 moved from Connecticut to Stockbridge where Mr. Dowd died in 1985. The Dowmel Foundation was formed following Catherine Mellon Dowd's death in 1995 as an expression of the Dowds' gratitude for the years they enjoyed living in the Berkshires. They hoped that the public program offered would be welcomed by the area's residents.
