An Audio Exploration of Contemporary Life and Current Topics Monday, October 6 - Native Language and Tradition The Berlitz Language Center at the Oneida Reservation in Oneida, NY hosts a discussion on efforts to reverse the decline in use of Native Oneida language. Tuesday, October 7 - Native Artifacts: Reclaiming the Past The Roundtable visits the Native artifact excavation at the Seneca White Springs dig site and speaks with scholars and members of the Seneca Iroquois Nation about regulation of artifact excavation. We visit National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC and talk with experts about the reclamation and regulation of Native artifacts. Wednesday, October 8 - Religion and Art: The Importance of Location in American Indian Thought Smithsonian Research Department experts discuss Native religions and sacred places. The Roundtable tours the Iroquois Indian Museum in Howe's Cave, NY and talks with the Education Curator and about art/artifact acquisition. Thursday, October 9 - Broken Promises: Treaties and Federal Recognition The Roundtable examines with scholars the legal issues surrounding U.S. treaties with New York Indian tribes and specific legal proceedings and land claims involving the Oneida Nation. Friday, October 10 - The Representation of the American Indian in American Literature - LIVE Panel Discussion from The Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY! The 10:35 segments in the broadcast will be Joe Donahue's interview with Anya Montiel is the Coordinator of the Vine Deloria Junior Native Writer's Series at The National Museum of the American Indian. The excerpts of Native writers reading their works throughout the segments can be found on the Smithsonian Institution CD release entitled Pulling Down the Clouds.
